Lessons Learned from Washington State’s First Progressive Design-Build Public School Project

Nov 8, 2019 9:30am ‐ Nov 8, 2019 10:30am

Identification: 1069

The Progressive Design-Build delivery method is paying off for Tacoma Public Schools. With material escalation and labor cost increases pushing existing projects into the red, the Boze Elementary School project's six year old budget couldn’t support current market conditions. TPS needed a better way to deliver capital projects and selected PDB. Learn how they succeeded on their first Progressive Design-Build project and how they will do it again in the future.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe how and why the Owner, Program Manager and Design-Builder utilized DBIA Best Practices to deliver the Boze Elementary School Progressive Design-Build project with record results.
  • Discus the benefits the Owner desired and received using Progressive Design-Build versus other approved Alternative Public Works Project Delivery Methods.
  • Differentiate how Progressive Design-Build facilitated an accelerated design & preconstruction schedule resulting in an in-budget GMP at 60% design and solicitation to groundbreaking in half the time.
  • Identify how the Progressive Design-Build was applied to improve local, minority, small and women owned subcontractor and supplier participation to district record levels.
Speaker(s):
  • Stephen E. Rich, DBIA, PMP, VMA, Sr. Preconstruction Manager, Korsmo Construction, Inc.
  • Morris Aldridge, DBIA, Executive Director - Planning and Construction, Tacoma Public School
  • James Dugan, Group Manager - Owners Representative Services, Parametrix

BIM Standards: Setting Realistic Expectations and Deliverables for Project Teams

Nov 8, 2019 9:30am ‐ Nov 8, 2019 10:30am

Identification: BIM1

Credits: None available.

In collaboration with the BIMForum, this session will provide an update on the current state of BIM standards while addressing the owner’s role in the development of these standards to align the entire team, to ensure that a verifiable and reliable model can be developed for construction and turnover of project information at the conclusion of the construction process. We will also identify some of the challenges in the standards development process, including an understanding of LOD, contract types, legal hurdles and how different collaborative project delivery models can bring value or hinder a team’s larger virtual design and construction goals.

Learning Objectives:
  • Define the value of integrating virtual design and construction into a Design Build delivery model.
  • Demonstrate how BIM Standards can effectively provide a roadmap for a successful and more collaborative project delivery.
  • Understand of how LOD creates a common language for project deliverables.
  • Share some of the current legal and contractual considerations of working in a collaborative BIM environment.
Speaker(s):
  • Brian Skripac, Assoc. DBIA, CM-BIM, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Director of Virtual Design and Construction, CannonDesign
  • Geoffrey W. Neumayr, SE, PE, Deputy Airport Director, San Francisco International Airport
