Description

This award-winning Design-Build Team comprised of L.A. County, Pankow and HKS employed innovative and collaborative tools and methods to successfully win and deliver the Zev Yaroslavsky Family Support Center Build-to-Suit on time and under budget. The Owner, Project Executive and Designer will discuss strategies for Owners during RFP preparation, design management tools for the Builder to lead a more efficient team, and insights Designers can employ to build consensus and provide design value during presentations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Innovative Tool: How to successfully utilize a Criteria Matrix Tool on your next design-build project
  • Owners: What constitutes a winning RFP? a) Quantity of Scoping Documents; b) Use the “Good, Better, Best” rating system of needs; c) What is the “best” length of time for an RFP response; d) Use of multi-colored text (black, blue, red ink) in narrative to communicate hierarchy of needs.
  • Designers: Design strategies with the power to win. a) How designers can utilize pre-award sessions effectively; b) Design to the “win strategy”; c) Designing without access to the users; d) An Integrated Design process saves time and creates value.
  • Builders: Construction processes to ensure success. a) Implemented a lessons learned/check-adjust system only half-way through the project to improve project turnover and closeout efficiency; b) Finish Strong

Beautiful building. I liked the discussion on progressive DB, quals based and eliminated the huge amount of waste/cost for teams who do not get the project and the fact that the stipend does not cover the cost incurred by the "runner up" teams.
