2018 Design-Build Conference & Expo

TH04 - Effective Design-Build in Higher Education: A Tale of Two Projects

Nov 8, 2018 10:00am ‐ Nov 8, 2018 11:30am

Credits: None available.

Standard: $35.00

Our intent is to compare and contrast the use of the Design-Build delivery process on two higher education projects – Augsburg University's Hagfors Center (classroom, lab, and office building) and Carleton College's Music and Performance Commons ( performing arts building). For both projects, the Owner selected the Design-Build delivery process based on relationships previously developed with McGough. We will discuss how the benefits of Design-Build were maximized during the delivery of each of these projects.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the benefits of implementing Lean processes into a Design-Build project
  • Explore how the Design-Build relationship can drive effective design/construction collaboration during the duration of a project
  • Discuss the advantages of early involvement for key subcontractors
  • Demonstrate how innovative design features can be successfully incorporated in a Design-Build project

  • Leif Anderson, Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Augsburg University
  • Bake Baker, AIA, LEED-AP, Preconstruction Services, Executive Vice President, McGough Construction
  • Rebecca Celis, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Principal, HGA Architects and Engineers
  • Thomas W. Hannasch, PE, PCQI, LEED AP, BD+C, DBIA, Sr. Project Manager, McGough Construction Co.
