BIM/VDC in the industry has been unduly reliant upon 'Rosetta Stone' Softwares which allow trades and designers to view one-another's scope and documentation.

It is Gilbane's opinion that one of the largest areas of inefficiency in the shop drawing process is the translation of information from design information to installation information.  No software is going to make this process effortless.

However, it should be noted that for a designer to work in one software, and trade contractors to work in others represents a lack of forward momentum for the sake of one entity's (of many) sunk costs.

Further, it Gilbane's Opinion that it is possible, in the industry, to align all strategic contractors into one software platform, allowing for seamless '3D Xrefs', accellerating processes, and almost eliminating the need for model translation schemes.

Finally, Gilbane will demonstrate that since 2015, it has impacted the subcontractor community with Scopes of Work that require this process, and will share what data we have on the schedule and cost benefits to the process.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the costs and benefits to aligning both designers and trade contractors into a single documentation media.
  • To understand the positive cost/schedule deviation from a legacy baseline that this process can achieve.
  • To understand ancillary and future benefits to align contractor and designer throughout the process, and how a single software platform delivery assists in these future benefits.
