Bob Smith AIA

Vice President for University Planning, Design and Operations, The University of Arizona

Bob Smith is a Campus Architect and VP for Business Affairs at the University of Arizona, with 40 years’ experience in Urban & Campus Planning, Building Design & Construction, and University Business Affairs Operations. He was a partner in a major San Diego design firm before joining UCSD and then the UA to develop new and innovative Campus Planning and Development approaches in response to an ever-evolving higher education landscape. Over the past 25 years, he led the planning and development of over $2.5 billion of University projects in California and Arizona, where he led the implementation of Design-Build and other Alternative Project Delivery Methods.

Bob is Past President of the Southern Arizona AIA, and the national Association of University Architects, and is on the Executive Advisory Board of the Alliance for Construction Excellence. Bob represents the UA in a number of local and regional urban planning forums, is Chair of the UA’s Planning & Design Advisory Committee, and Co-Chair of the UA President’s Advisory Council on the Environment & Sustainability.

Bob is also working throughout Arizona to expand the UA presence to meet growing higher education, healthcare and community service needs in an increasingly constrained economic environment. He is currently leading the development of a unique Campus Masterplan concept that focuses on solving specific campus planning challenges that are directly related to the University’s highest priority Strategic Plan goals and objectives.
